Who Are Our Super Heroes?
Our Missionaries Of Course!!!


We wanted to send our Kiddos a fun box for Halloween and who doesn't love Super Heroes for Halloween!?!? 

But we also wanted to add in something spiritual to our items - so along with doing traditional comic book super heroes we also did Book of Mormon Heroes as well. 



My Hero doesn't wear a cape.  He/She wears a Missionary Name-Tag for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints!


This box could be modified to be sent at any time of year - but with the Halloween Holiday Coming Up our Missionaries had fun with the Costume Items goofing around on P-Day with their companions!  We made sure that we had heroes that would work for both our Sisters and our Elders because they truly are our Super Heroes!!!



Armor Up!!!  It's always so fun to see the pictures our missionaries send home of them opening up their crazy boxes decorated in whatever the theme of the box is. Most of the boxes we mailed were 12X12X8 which meant the box flap size was just under 12X6 so you can simply cut one piece of 12X12 scrapbook paper in half for each flap - then trim to fit.

Obviously these ideas could be modified for sending any size box to your missionaries.  We chose to mail this size simply for economy - since all but one of our 8 missionaries were serving outside of the U.S. - it was just a few dollars more to send a large box vs. a medium box.


You’ve Got Mail!!!  One thing we always included in all of our Missionary Box Mom Boxes was a personalized letter to each Missionary from each Mother.  Inside our letters we included our testimonies, the reason we chose that particular item to include in the box, along with uplifting messages filled with love.  


A lot of the items won't make much sense as to why you are including them in the box unless you explain how it specifically applies to your Missionary and to Missionary Work.  Many times over I have received thank you letters from our Missionaries - but the things they thanked us all for the most was the letters we included.  It’s just a little piece of ‘Home’ in a box!  So don’t forget to write!

To Infinity & Beyond!!!  As we decided on each ‘Missionary Box Theme’, which we based around a scripture or missionary teaching idea, we would then brainstorm fun ideas that could be included in our box.  I often wondered if our missionaries realized how comprehensive we were in our themes!  It honestly might have been just as much fun for us to build these boxes as it was for them to receive them!  








Each of our 8 Missionary Box Moms chose a Book of Mormon Hero, a Super Hero, and then threw in a fun Halloween Treat for our Missionaries.   Depending on the size of the box you are sending – you could include or delete any of the following items – or come up with a few of your own.   We tried to make sure that most of our items could be used to enhance missionary discussions, to be given away, to decorate their missionary apartments and left for future missionaries when they moved on, or simply eaten and enjoyed.  But of course there were always a few that were just for fun!

Include Del Parson's - The Story Behind the Art Description: This image was inspired by my wife and son when he was leaving on his mission.  We were at the airport saying our goodbyes, and I watched him as he hugged my wife.  She was hanging on, having a very hard time letting him go, and he was hugging her, but he was looking beyond her - toward the airplane.  He was obviously ready to go.  The expression on her face was one of trepidation.  It was as if she were asking herself, "Have I prepared him for this?  Have I done all I could?"  While his expression was one of eager determination.  He had been preparing so long for this and he was ready to get started.

That moment made me think of the story of the Stripling Warriors.  Those two thousand young men had never fought before.  They had no idea what they were up against, or what to expect going into battle against the Lamanites, but that didn't matter to them.  They were prepared in spirit and faith.  They knew that the things their mothers had taught them were true, and they were willing to march into the unknown, with their strength and courage coming from their faith.  I think about those young men and their resolve to defend their families and their homes.  They went forth with bravery and they succeeded.  Then I think about their mothers.  I know how worried and afraid they must have been.  That's what moms do.  They worry and they wonder if they have prepared their sons.  That is really the feeling I wanted to portray in this painting.

I chose Captain Moroni for my Super Hero.  I am so thankful for the strong and righteous leader he was.  He wanted to remind the people how important it was to defend their families and their faith.  Back then he made "the Title of Liberty" and prayed that his people could stay free so they could worship God and receive His blessings!  Today we are still blessed and now have "The Family, A Proclamation to the World."  I am so thankful for a prophet who leads us and helps me to know how to protect my family.  I am so proud of you for helping others have this knowledge so they can be together forever.

The Incredible Hulk possesses an incredible level of superhuman physical ability.  His strength is limitless, he has shown a high resistance to physical damage.

A REAL superhero is Captain Moroni. The scriptures describe him as a 'strong and mighty man'.   "If all men had been and were and ever would be like unto Moroni, the powers of hell would be shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men."

Captain Moroni never wavered in choosing the right... he NEVER backed down!  He made an oath to defend his people, his rights, his country, and his religion.  He kept Heavenly Father and his people forever in his heart and made sure that all his efforts were to serve them both.

For my Super Heroes I chose Elastigirl and Ironman.  Elastigirl because if we are flexible and putty in God's hands He will form us into the most powerful and amazing version of ourselves that is possible!  I liked Ironman because he was an ordinary man but because he had a mighty change of heart his heart gave the armor power.  When we have had a mighty change of heart and put on the full armor of God we will be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.  You will be able to stand against the wiles and forces of the devil.  You will be a Super Hero!

Book: The Upward Reach by Sterling W. Sill (This book is Out of Print – but you can find it easily on Ebay or Amazon)  It is a great treasure trove of information on Leadership and Missionary Work. Michelle copied the chapter on Mormon found on page 248 and included it in the box.

As you read this biography of Mormon you will see why he is one of my heroes.  He is one of the first people I would like to meet in Heaven.  For my Halloween gift I found a scripture where Christ tells the apostles what kind of Missionaries to be.  He tells them to be Wise as a serpent.  How do you be wise as a serpent?  In Genesis 3 it describes the serpent as being the most subtle and crafty creatures that God created.  When a snake is hunting they are very patient as they slowly inch towards their goal.  As a Missionary you need to be wise, subtle, patient, and a little crafty.  Christ also told them to be as harmless as a dove.  To be a Missionary that is like a dove you need to be humble, peaceful, and Full of the Holy Ghost as you speak.  Keep Up the Hero Work!

In studying Ammon I have learned that I need to be more faithful and diligent.  I have not been spit on, mocked, stoned, bound in cords or cast into prison.  He was so patient, loving, humble, and determined to keep teaching the gospel to the Lamanites.  I love the part in the talk that I included that says, "The story of Ammon teaches us that heroism inspired of God is possible for all of us and that with faith we can perform great miracles.  This way is not easy, as Ammon continually reminds us, but the joy is unspeakable and the peace past understanding."  I mentioned that each of you are my Hero's!  You all continue to demonstrate amazingly great faith whether you are just starting your mission or nearing the end.  As I read and talk to your mothers, each of you have been patient, loving, humble and determined.  All of you have had doors slammed, you have been mocked and even a few of you have been spit upon but you continue to do your best.  You brush yourself off and find ways to work harder to spread the Gospel.  Each of you have grown so much.  I think that has been one of my favorite parts is seeing that growth!  Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful experience and for letting this crazy group of moms get to know all of you in such a personal way.  I love you with all of my heart!  I tell my kids when I write them to Be Careful!!!  Follow all of the mission rules to keep you safe.  Keep working hard and enjoy the journey!  Keep safe my Valiant Stripling Warriors!

When we 'Moms' first came up with the 'Theme' of Superheroes for our next Missionary Moms Box night I immediately knew that I wanted to choose Captain America as my 'Super Hero' - but for some reason I then chose Samuel the Lamanite as my 'Book of Mormon Hero' almost as quickly.  It wasn't until I started to figure out what I wanted to use as my 'Object' to represent this theme that I realized Captain America and Samuel the Lamanite have a lot of similar 'Super Hero' qualities.  

Both Samuel the Lamanite & Captain America were brave, courageous, valiant, reliable, trustworthy, they had integrity, a warrior spirit, they were helpful, they were life savers, they both inspired people to choose righteousness over evil and to also do good in the world.  As Theodore Roosevelt once said “The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strive valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, for there is no effort without error and shortcoming.”

Just as Captain America has a shield of protection you were also given the Spirit of the Lord to protect you and the Holy Ghost to guide you, Captain America trusted in his own power and that his shield would never fail him.  Just like the Missionaries are given power to preach the gospel - the Lord will Never Fail You.  You accepted the Call to Serve the Lord just as Captain America accepted his call to inspire, help, and teach by example.  Samuel the Lamanite accepted his call from the Lord to go preach the gospel to the Nephites even when they tried to kill him.  But Samuel the Lamanite also trusted that he would be protected while on the Lord's errand - so he climbed the wall and preached to the people. 

Helaman 16: 1-3

1And now, it came to pass that there were many who heard the words of Samuel, the Lamanite, which he spake upon the walls of the city. And as many as believed on his word went forth and sought for Nephi; and when they had come forth and found him they confessed unto him their sins and denied not,... 
2But as many as there were who did not believe in the words of Samuel were angry with him; and they cast stones at him upon the wall, and also many shot arrows at him as he stood upon the wall; but the Spirit of the Lord was with him, insomuch that they could not hit him with their stones neither... 
3Now when they saw that they could not hit him, there were many more who did believe on his words, insomuch that they went away unto Nephi to be baptized.
I hope you always remember that when you were set apart as a missionary you were given power and authority to act as a representative of Jesus Christ.  As you 'Suit Up' each morning and put on your final piece of armor (Your Name Tag) just remember whose name it is on your heart.  He will never leave you or forsake you but will give you power and strength to preach the gospel to Everyone.  You too were called on a mission to protect and to save the world. 

As I started trying to find an 'Object' to represent Captain America I found myself down in Southern Utah with my daughter, Sydney, as she was finishing up a 9-week 9 Temple personal challenge.  My mom was with us and one of her favorite stores in St. George is a store call Del Sol - so we always make a visit to this store whenever we are in the area.  It's kindof a fun crazy place and all of their merchandise that they sell in the store is light sensitive - it changes from no color to full color when you put the object in the sunshine.  

NASA explored earlier concepts of color change for its space program back in the 70s and 80s, but Del Sol further developed and expanded this technology, engineering its own proprietary Spectrachrome color changing crystals that are found in all Del Sol products today.  Del Sol's color-changing crystals are harvested from the sunniest, most colorful places on the planet and then engineered for use on nearly 10,000 color-changing retail items.  Much like a flower that blossoms in the sun's rays, Del Sol's exclusive Spectrachrome crystals open and unfold upon exposure to sunlight, revealing their hidden colors.

This made me think of how each of you takes upon yourself the 'Light of Christ' everyday and how it not only changes you it also changes the hearts and lives of those of whom you serve.  I hope as you wear this Captain America T-Shirt it will remind you of this concept and bring a smile to your face as you walk in and out of the Sunshine all day long!  Y'All Rock Like the Avengers!!!

Missionary Super Power Candy Bar and Missionary Super Hero Sucker Capes

(The MBM Super Power Candy Bar Printable is designed to cover a 1.55 oz. Hershey's Milk Chocolate Candy Bar or another candy bar that measures 2.25" X 5.25".  Print out and cut along edges.  Wrap around candy bar and secure with Glue Dots or tape.  The ends of the candy bar will poke out beyond the wrapper. )  (The MBM Super Hero Sucker Capes will work on any sucker but I chose a Charms Super Blow Pop Sucker.) 



Super Hero Soap


Making your own soap is fun and easy - so if you have never tried Melt and Pour Soap Crafting before - now is your chance!!!  The Materials are inexpensive, easy to find, and the steps are not complicated at all.

Most of the supplies will be available in your local craft store or your own kitchen at home - but I purchased a lot of my supplies online at Elements Bath and Body (a Wholesale Soap Making Company).
For this project I used Melt and Pour Soap Base Clear and Melt and Pour Soap Base White, Multiple Superhero Silicone Molds purchased on Amazon, Fiji Fruit Pineapple Fragrance for some of the soaps and Dreamsicle Fragrance for some, Mica Pearl Black  and Mica Pearl White Sparkles (Micas are  super sparkly and add shimmer and shine to your finished soaps)  Liquid Colorant True Red,  Liquid Colorant Sapphire Blue,  and Liquid Colorant in Grass Green.  (Cost: A regular size bar of soap would be Approx. .80 cents per Bar - but since most of these soaps are small it would be much less.) 

Materials Needed: 

1. Melt and Pour (AKA "Glycerin") Soap Base
This is a pre-made soap that comes in clear or white blocks.  The white is the same as the clear base, but with a white colorant.  It's a basic soap that you can melt in the microwave, add colorants and fragrance to, and remold in any flexible container you have. 
2. Rubbing Alcohol and a Spray Bottle
This is your best friend, and you will need it for every soap project.  Just fill a small spray bottle with isopropyl rubbing alcohol from a drugstore and you are ready to go.  A few light sprays will pop any surface bubbles when you're done pouring the soap into your mold.  It also makes soap layers adhere to one another if you are doing a multiple layer project.
3. Colorant (Liquid Colorant and or Micas can be used)
FD&C colorants are what you'll most likely find at your local craft store.  These look like liquid food colors and are practically the same, but not edible.  Micas are made of little powdery flakes that are dyed.  They are shimmery and sometimes even sparkle.  Micas come as powders so you will need to stir them into a little rubbing alcohol before adding them to your project so they don't clump.
4. Fragrance Oils
One of the most exciting parts of making soap is choosing the fragrance.  The options are practically infinite.  You can find everything from tangy lemon to S'More scents.  When shopping for fragrance oils make sure they are specifically for soap making. Do not use fragrance oils you buy at the grocery store intended for candles or extracts.
5. Soap Mold
Soap making molds come in various shapes, sizes and materials. It's crucial to consider what kind of mold you'll be using when designing a soapy project. ... One of the most popular soap mold options is a silicone mold. They are easy to clean with no lining necessary and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  They are also very inexpensive to buy.
